Description
The barn at Pirton Court is likely from the 17th century, though it may be older, and has been altered in the 18th and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame, with sections of brick nogging and wide boarding, and sits on a stone plinth. The brickwork is in English garden wall bond, and it has a double-Roman tile roof. The barn consists of five bays.
On the side facing the road, the right bay has a part brick wall, with framing on the left side; the bottom two panels are brick nogged, while the top panel is boarded. There is a 2-light casement window. The left side has brick nogging on the bottom panel and boarding on the top two panels, with a sill that appears to run the full length. The left gable is weatherboarded on the upper part, while the lower part is obscured by buildings that are not of special interest.
In the yard, the right bay has been rebuilt in brick, with former double boarded doors leading to the eaves and opening onto the threshing floor; the right door has been replaced by weatherboarded framing in 1987. The threshing floor seems to have had doors only on one side, as a moat may have been located between the other side and the road. The next bay to the left is brick, featuring a post and short brace to the wall plate by the doors. The last two bays on the left are not visible, and the interior is not accessible. There is also a brick extension towards the drive that is not of special interest. The barn forms a group with Pirton Court.
