Description
Upper Upthorpe Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse built of squared rubble with a concrete tile roof. It has an L-shaped plan with a gabled wing on the right and a blocked former entry in the internal corner. The house features a large external stack that has a saddle-back connection to the roof, with double ashlar shafts and moulded capping on the right, and a small brick gable stack on the left. At the back of the gabled wing, there is a small two-storey extension, though its function is unclear.
The farmhouse has two storeys and an attic. The elevation facing the road has one window with three-light casements under wood lintels, and a small extra light on the right that may have replaced a former doorway. The door on the far left is now blank and set in a heavy frame. On the return wall, there are two blocked openings, and the gable features a two-light window above a four-light window, which in turn is above a five-light window, all with wood lintels. The ground floor window has a transom, and it is likely that the four-light window was originally also a five-light window.
At the back, there are various mullioned windows, including a four-light window with ovolo-moulded mullions and a small fixed light with a chamfered stone surround. The interior has been significantly modified, featuring a newel stair leading to the first floor, deep stopped ovolo moulded ground floor beams, and a heavy roof structure with a high collar and tie but no struts, supported by two purlins. There is also one large blocked opening in the back gable of the extension, and one first-floor door in a very heavy chamfered frame with a straight-sided pointed top.
