Description

The Hopton Green War Memorial is a stone cross built in 1921, designed by P.B. Tubbs. It features a fluted column topped with a lantern finial adorned with foliate mouldings. The memorial stands on an octagonal plinth that is capped and inscribed with dedications and the names of the fallen, resting on an octagonal two-stepped base. This is further elevated by a large six-stepped platform integrated into a steep embankment on the village green. The steps are located to the east, south, and west, while to the north, the memorial is positioned close to road level, with two shallow steps leading down from the curb. Additional later features include steps, dry-stone garden walling, and a steel handrail along the southern approach. However, only the cross and its base are considered of special interest.

The south face of the plinth bears the inscription: "IN EVERY GRATEFUL/ REMEMBRANCE/ OF THE MEN OF/ CAM WHO FELL/ IN THE WAR/ 1914-1918," along with the names of 42 individuals who served. The upper step of the plinth also carries the inscription: "THEY WERE A WALL BOTH BY NIGHT AND BY DAY." The square base of the shaft, below the broach stops, is inscribed with "1939-1945/ WAR," listing 16 additional names. The north-west face of the upper plinth notes that it was refurbished by Cam Parish and Stroud District Councils in November 1996. A bronze plaque commemorating Martin Lamb, who died in Afghanistan in 2011, is attached to the northern face of the memorial.
