PAINSWICK NEW STREET (south east side) Knight and Phillips monuments circa.32 metres south east of north gateway to churchyard of Church of St Mary

GV II Two pedestal tombs. Late C18. Limestone.

(a) Flat pyramidal top to moulded edge, sunk panels two faces, round raised on two faces, with cherubs, cross and book. Inscriptions worn, but include William Knight, 1785; a date of 1738 probably earlier than the design of the monument. Set on a three-step base, formerly railed.

(b) Tall monument set diagonally on square base. Square domed terminal, moulded capping, fluted frieze, raised shouldered panels, moulded base. Inscriptions include James Phillips, 1796; Daniel Phillips, n.d.; Robert Wight, 1866. The design is probably of the 1796 date.
