Description
The Knight and Phillips monuments are two pedestal tombs located approximately 32 metres southeast of the north gateway to the churchyard of the Church of St Mary in Painswick. They date from the late 18th century and are made of limestone.
The first tomb features a flat pyramidal top with a moulded edge and sunk panels on two faces, along with round raised designs on two faces that include cherubs, a cross, and a book. The inscriptions are worn but include the name William Knight from 1785, and a date of 1738 that likely predates the monument's design. This tomb is set on a three-step base that was formerly enclosed by a railing.
The second monument is taller and is set diagonally on a square base. It has a square domed terminal with moulded capping, a fluted frieze, raised shouldered panels, and a moulded base. The inscriptions on this monument include James Phillips from 1796, Daniel Phillips with no date, and Robert Wight from 1866. The design of this monument likely dates to 1796.
