Description
St Michael's Restaurant is a house in a row that has been converted into a restaurant. It dates from the 17th century and has elements from the 19th or 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed and squared limestone, with a stone slate roof at the front and a concrete tile or Welsh slate roof at the back. The front has a normal eaves line, but there is a long, deep wing extending to the left at the back.
The structure is two storeys high with an attic and features a two-window layout. The first and second floors have three-light chamfer mullion stone casements with stopped hoods, all dating from the 19th or 20th century, along with a two-light half-dormer positioned centrally above. The entrance consists of a central 20th-century plank door beneath a flat stone hood with a moulded edge supported by consoles. The back of the building has various casements.
Inside, the restaurant retains one deep-chamfered and stopped beam, which is now in two sections separated by a later staircase. To the left, there are two 17th-century two-light chamfer-mullion stone casements set in deep embrasures, although these are now blanked off by the adjoining Town Hall. Beneath the front part of the back wing, there is a stone vaulted cellar that can be accessed via a stone staircase.
