Description
St Mary’s Cottage is a house, likely dating from the late 18th century, though possibly with earlier origins. It is situated on Victoria Street in Painswick, positioned between the street and the churchyard. The construction is of coursed dressed limestone with a concrete tile roof, featuring two eaves stacks – one brick and one concrete block. The house is two storeys with an attic. The street facade features a C19 flush panelled door with two glazed lights, topped by a C20 hood supported by iron brackets. At first floor level on the right side is a two-light steel casement window above a reset elliptical oculus. A narrow gable to the right has three 12-pane sash windows arranged across three levels. The left gable, which is wider, has a two-light steel casement window in the attic, beneath a flush lintel with a key stone, and a C20 glazed door set low down on the left. The side facing the churchyard displays three 12-pane sash windows, a small four-pane casement in what was a former door opening, and a two-light steel casement window on the left. The building’s plan is trapezoidal, but the roofline is level on each side. Although it has undergone considerable modification, the cottage remains historically significant as part of Victoria Street.
