Description
Birmingham House is a house and shop located on Victoria Street in Painswick. It dates from the early 19th century, although it likely has an earlier roof structure. The building is constructed of coursed and squared dressed stone with a stone slate roof. It is a long structure that curves around to St Mary's Street.
The building has two storeys and features a total of four windows on the ground floor, including three former 12-pane sash windows that no longer have horizontal glazing bars. On the curved section, there is a 19th-century shop front with stone pilasters, a shallow fascia with a cornice, and a stall riser. Flanking a central 20th-century glazed door are large 12-pane casements, with a 12-pane sash window to the right.
On the first floor, there are two 16-pane sash windows and two 12-pane sash windows, one of which is centered above the shop front. Between the second and third bays, there is a 6-panel 19th-century door set beneath a cornice supported by consoles. Towards the left gable, there is a large rebuilt chimney stack. The building likely originally comprised two or more properties and occupies a significant corner position, generously extending along the curve.
