Description

Thorne is an early 17th-century house located on the southwest side of Friday Street in Painswick. It is built of limestone near ashlar with a stone slate roof, while the back slopes are covered with concrete tiles. The house features a twin-gabled former through-passage plan and has two storeys and attics with two windows on the front.

The ground floor includes a three-light flanking panelled door, a large multi-pane former shop window, a second door to the right, and a two-light wood casement in a former door opening at the corner. These elements are set above a moulded string that is broken at the large window and raised over the right-hand opening. The first floor has three-light casements, while the second floor features two-light casements, all with stopped hoods and chamfer-mullioned. The gables are coped, with a large stack set back on the right and a brick stack on the left. The back of the house also has twin gables, and one ground floor casement has a hollow mould mullion.

Inside, the interior has been much altered but retains two good stone Doric columns that support a timber beam and are built into the wall; these are believed to be from a former market hall in the area. The interior also features deep chamfered beams and a stone flag floor. On the first floor, there is a timber-framed partition, and the roof consists of five bays with A-frames, much of which has been replaced. A curved recess on the right party wall may indicate the position of an early staircase. Early 20th-century photographs show a small shop to the left of the entrance door, and the name of the property comes from the shop owner. Thorne is part of an important group in the town centre, alongside The Gables and Hamand Antiques.
