Description

The Shetland Shop is a house and shop located in a row, dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of squared and coursed dressed limestone with a stone slate roof. This impressive double-fronted property features tall coped full gables, which are separated by a short section of roof. On the left side, the gable has been built up to support a 20th-century stack at the eaves.

The building has two storeys and an attic, with a window arrangement of one window on the left and one on the right at the ground floor. The first-floor windows are positioned towards the centre and do not align with those in the gables. On the ground floor, there is a 4-pane sash window that lights the adjoining property, Birmingham House, located on Victoria Street. Next to it is a well-crafted 24-paned bowed 19th-century shop front, featuring fluted pilaster jambs on either side of a central part-glazed door, which is set in a chamfered surround with a flat wooden hood supported by wrought iron brackets, accessed by one step.

On the first floor, there are 3-light stone mullioned casements, and in the attic, there are 2-light stone mullioned casements. All these windows have a recessed hollow chamfer mould and are topped with stopped hoods. The building also has concrete block stacks on the right side and at the eaves on the left.
