Description

This former Baptist chapel, now commercial premises, was built in 1806, originally for the Wesleyans before being sold to Baptists in 1831. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone with a plain tile roof. The gabled front, facing down New Street, has three windows on each of two storeys. The coped gable features an 1806 datestone within a lozenge panel, beneath a stopped drip mould, and above a second oval panel inscribed with ‘Baptist Chapel 183’. The front has two-light round arched windows with Y-tracery and 20th-century leaded glazing within plain architraves, keystone and impost blocks. A pair of glazed doors sit centrally beneath a Y-tracery glazed head. The side elevation facing New Street contains two two-light windows matching the front. The building is described as handsome and holds an important position in the street when viewed from the south.
