Description

The barn located to the north-east of Gastrells Farmhouse dates from the early 18th century and underwent alterations in the early 19th century. It is constructed from coursed and squared rubble limestone and timber framing, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The barn features five bays and has an attached pigsty at the north end, along with a timber-framed lean-to on the west side.

On the west side, there is weatherboarding above a low stone plinth, large central barn plank doors, and an attached lean-to to the left that is also weatherboarded. The south end displays a stone gable with two slit vents and a pitching hole above a plank door. The north end has a stone gable with a central slit vent and an attached brick pigsty that has a gabled end and a clay plain tile roof.

The east side features a weatherboarded gable leading to a central porch with plank doors, weatherboarding above a low stone plinth to the left of the porch, and an attached 20th-century concrete block-built lean-to on the right, which is not of special interest. Inside, the barn has a timber-framed structure with a post and truss design, a strutted tie beam, and collar roof supported by two rows of purlins. The sides have square framing with short diagonal bracing, and the inner faces of the gable ends are made of random rubble, while the exterior was refaced in the early 19th century. This barn is part of a group that includes Gastrells Farmhouse and a cider house.
