Description

The War Memorial, designed by Mabel St John Mildmay, was constructed in 1920 using local limestone.

The memorial stands on an octagonal platform that is approximately 1.5 meters across and features three steps. It consists of a small wheel cross above a four-sided section with blind arched fields adorned with cusped decoration, all atop a slender, tapering octagonal shaft. The shaft has a moulded foot and is set on a chamfered, cubic base.

One face of the base displays a plaque that reads: "ROLL OF HONOUR / 1914-1918," listing the names of 22 individuals who fell during the First World War. Below this, the dates "1939-1945" are inscribed along with the names of 2 individuals who fell during the Second World War. Continuing anti-clockwise from the plaque, the base is inscribed with the phrase: "+ GREATER LOVE HATH NO / MAN THAN THIS, THAT / A MAN LAY DOWN HIS / LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS +," in a detailed Serif font. Another face reads: "+ IN GLORIOUS MEMORY / OF STINCHCOMBE MEN / WHO FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 +." The final face states: "+ THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR YOU: SEE THAT / YOU LIVE FOR OTHERS: / TIS THE BEST THAT / YOU CAN GIVE +." The names of the Fallen from the Second World War and the dates of the conflict are inscribed on the faces of the second step of the platform.
