Description
The Bagendon War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920, with an additional inscription added after the Second World War. It is made from local limestone and is located on a grassed bank at a junction on the north-west edge of the village.
The memorial features a Celtic cross with a moulded collar below, set on a tapering octagonal column. The square plinth has a mid-20th century metal plaque on the side facing the road, inscribed in white lettering. The plaque commemorates the men of the parish who fell in the Great War from 1914 to 1918 and the World War from 1939 to 1945, listing the dates of the conflicts and the names of the fallen from both wars.
The memorial stands on a substantial two-stepped base, which has mouldings at the top and bottom. The front faces of the steps are inscribed with text; the upper step reads: "LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER SEE TO IT THAT THEIR NAMES BE NOT FORGOTTEN," while the lower step states: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." The text shows signs of wear in places.
Access to the memorial is provided by four stone steps set into the bank.
