Description

The boundary wall, railings, and gates to the school, along with the attached churchyard gatepiers and gates, date from around 1850 and were designed by Henry Woodyer, with some rebuilding in the 20th century. The structure is made of snecked rubble limestone with a concrete block backing, featuring iron railings and gates. The walls extend from the Churchfield Road side of the school to the boundary with the churchyard, incorporating a churchyard gateway at the entrance from Churchfield Road. The wall has chamfered coping above a continuous string course and is interrupted by an outbuilding to the east of the school and openings for school gates. To the north of the school, there are iron pedestrian gates set between square ashlar piers topped with cross gables, with iron railings on either side that connect to the stone wall. Similar iron gates and railings are located to the west of the school. The attached coach gateway to the churchyard features steeply coped gatepiers that form gables on both the front and back, each adorned with a mitre in a cinquefoil-headed panel. The spear-topped iron gates showcase trefoil and quatrefoil scrollwork. The walls, railings, and gateway contribute to the Victorian character of the church and school, which are recognized for their group value.
