Description
The boundary wall of the school and school house, with three sets of gates, was built around 1854 by William Butterfield. It is constructed from snecked stone with four courses of red brick above, topped with stone coping and buttresses. The wooden gates feature iron fittings and the wall stands approximately 1.2 metres high, with the east wall of the school yard being slightly taller.
There are one set of double gates and two sets of single gates, which provide access to the school yard, the school entrance, and the School House entrance, respectively. The double gates to the school yard have alternating long and short bars with hollow chamfered tops; the left gate post is original, while the narrower right gate has strap hinges with ducks-head ends, along with horizontal and diagonal braces. The school entrance features a pair of gates with tall vertical bars and hollow chamfered tops, supported by horizontal and diagonal braces. The gate posts here are 20th-century concrete and are not of special interest. The School House entrance has gates with alternating long and short bars and straight chamfered tops, also with horizontal and diagonal braces, and the gate posts are likely original. The truncated pyramidal shape of the posts and rails echoes the design of the chimney pots at the school house. This structure is included mainly for its group value.
