Description
A pair of houses dating from around 1855, designed by William Butterfield as part of the estate of Viscount Downe at Baldersby Park. The houses are constructed of red brick in English bond, with ashlar bands and dressings, and have applied timber framing. They feature a plain tile roof and are in a High Victorian style. The building is a long range, with a projecting gabled bay to the left, and a lower, angled entrance porch to the right of the main front. The houses are largely single-storey, with irregular window placement. Timber framing is applied above the window sill level in the centre of the front elevation. The Tudor Cottage entrance is located in a timber-framed porch with a half-hipped roof, situated to the left. The Lilac Cottage entrance is in the centre of the front and features a 20th-century plank door. Two projecting bays contain cross windows which rise as half-dormers under gables with barge boards. A further similar bay is located to the right, also under a half-hipped roof. A large three-light mullion and transom window is present in the left gabled wing, also under a half-hipped roof. The remaining windows are small casements. The roof is hipped and incorporates two stepped stacks with tumbled brickwork and ashlar bands.
