Description
Numbers 3 and 4, known as The Cottages, are a pair of attached houses built around 1855 by William Butterfield as part of the estate for Viscount Downe of Baldersby Park. They are constructed of red brick in English bond and feature a 20th-century tiled roof, showcasing a High Victorian style. The cottages are one and a half storeys tall, with a one-storey bay on the right and irregularly placed windows.
The entrance to No 3 is located on the left and consists of a 20th-century plank door set in a porch that has a hipped roof and corner buttresses. On the ground floor, there are two three-light wooden casements with glazing bars, positioned under segmental brick arches, and a two-light casement to the left of the porch. The first floor features two tall windows that rise as half-hipped dormers. A central stack straddles the ridge and is stepped, with tumbled-in brickwork, while a narrow chimney is located against the right gable.
Notably, the left end of the building was raised from one to one and a half storeys around 1960, above a small window. The right return has a door to No 4 made of vertical boards with beading and strap hinges, which appears to be original.
