Description
The lych gate to the Church of St James was built between 1856 and 1858 by William Butterfield for Viscount Downe of Baldersby Park. It is designed in the High Victorian style and constructed from snecked stone with red brick bands on the side walls, complemented by stone buttresses. The gate features wooden gates and a timber-framed structure with archways and a roof. The roof is tiled, and the gate is square in plan, with timber posts on stylobates that create a wide and a narrow opening between the stone flanking walls. The overall width is approximately 4 metres, with a double gate and a single gate. The gates consist of vertical bars that are 1.2 metres tall, alternating with shorter bars. The top edges of the bars are finished with hollow chamfers and blunt ends. The inner surface has horizontal bars, and the gates are fitted with original iron strap and clasp hinges, handles, and iron spikes designed in a fleur-de-lis pattern.
