Description
The Old Vicarage is a vicarage that has been converted into a house, built in 1854 by William Butterfield for Viscount Downe of Baldersby Park. It is constructed from snecked stone with ashlar dressings and features a tile roof. The building has two storeys and displays irregular fenestration.
The entrance front includes a slightly projecting gabled wing that features a pointed-arched entrance and a window with Geometric tracery. The remaining windows are 1- and 2-light ogee and trefoil headed mullion windows with sashes, all set in stone surrounds. The left side of the building has a canted bay with 6- and 8-pane wooden sashes and timber-framing on the first floor, topped by a half-hipped gable.
The main chimney has a slightly protruding stack that rises through the gable wall to the left of the entrance, while a second chimney is located in the center of the rear roof slope. Both chimneys are stepped, featuring ashlar bands and truncated pyramidal flues.
Inside, original features such as cupboards, panelling, doors, and banisters remain, with some displaying painted decoration. There is also an open screen of vertical wooden bars at the foot of the stairs.
