Description

The school and school house, built in 1854, were designed by William Butterfield for Viscount Downe of Baldersby Park. Constructed from snecked stone with ashlar bands and window surrounds, the school features a Westmorland slate roof, while the house has a tiled roof and stone stacks. The school has an L-shaped, two-room layout with the school house attached to the right. It is built in a high Victorian style with one and a half storeys and irregular fenestration. The central panelled door is located under a timber-framed gabled porch, with lean-to roofs on each side. The main hall is illuminated by two 2-light Geometric windows in the left gable. The stack that straddles the roof has flues shaped like truncated pyramids. The school house has one and one half storeys and five bays, with a central door beneath a wooden porch featuring barge boards. The flanking windows are 3-light mullions with wooden sashes, and there are two 2-light mullion windows beneath half-hipped dormers above. The roof is hipped to the right, and there is a shield of the Downe family set in a recess on the left gable. A single-storey bay to the left has a hipped roof, and the stack at the left gable end also has flues in the form of truncated pyramids. Inside, there is an original wooden staircase with an open wooden screen at the foot and a large linen cupboard on the landing.
