Description
The boundary wall of the churchyard for the Church of St James, with a gate in the south-east corner, was built between 1856 and 1858 by William Butterfield. It is constructed of snecked stone with four courses of red brick above, topped with a stone coping and supported by stone buttresses at intervals along the road frontage. The wall has an overall height of 1.2 metres at the lych gate, stepping down to approximately 1 metre where it meets the cottage wall to the left. The gate stands at an overall height of 1.1 metres and features long and short vertical bars with tops finished with hollow chamfers. It is fitted with strap hinges that have trefoil ends, along with an iron handle and latch. The structure is currently in poor condition and is included for its group value.
