Description

The Black and White House is a detached house dating from the late 16th century, with a restoration in the 19th century. It features a timber frame, limestone ashlar chimneys, and a stone slate roof. The building has a T-plan with a north cross-wing and is two stories high with an attic.

On the east side, there is a projecting gable to the right that has a jettied attic and chevron carvings on the bressumer chamfer. The ground floor is close studded above a limestone plinth, and the gable has a single window with 6-light mullioned and transomed casements, along with a small attic casement. To the left, there is a hipped timber framed porch roof and an upper floor oriel under the 19th-century restored eaves. The roof features two ridge-mounted chimneys with moulded caps.

The north side of the cross-wing has small framing with close studding on the ground floor above the plinth, an open-framed porch, and a lean-to outshut to the left. It also includes a three-window arrangement of mullioned and transomed fenestration with a central plank door.

On the west side, there is a projecting gable to the left with an attic jettied like the east side, a single mullioned and transomed window in the gable, and a projecting ground floor oriel with a stone slate hood. To the right, there are two-window casement fenestrations and a single gabled attic dormer.

The south end features a gable with a single hooded oriel on both the ground and upper floors, along with a small-paned attic casement. The extensive 19th-century restoration reused much of the original timber.
