Description

The memorial gateway to the churchyard, built in 1922, features gates and gatepiers made of ashlar limestone. The square piers have moulded panelling on the front face that includes brass memorial inscription plaques. Each pier is topped with a moulded cap and a ball finial, and they sit on a moulded base. The two-leaf gates have a central scroll-work rail, and the scrolled overthrow rises to the center, containing a brass inscription panel. This gateway is an important feature of the townscape, enhancing the grouping at the top of Long Street and the west aspect of the Church of St James.
