Description

Hambutts End is a small, detached house dating from the early to mid-19th century. Constructed of limestone ashlar with an asbestos cement slate roof, it is a ‘villa’ type house. Attached to the left is a lower unit, originally an apple store and now part of the living accommodation. The main house is two storeys and has an attic, with three windows. These are 2-light casements with small panes, featuring a central stop-chamfered mullion, a single light to the centre, all under stopped hoods. A plank door, with fillets, is set within a small gabled stone porch, which now has an outer glazed door. To the left return, there is a 2-light casement with a stop-chamfered mullion and an original iron casement. The roof has coped gables and small square stacks. The lower unit to the left features a 9-pane sash window above a light in a previously open space with a peaked head, flanked by 2-light casements. Internally, the house has a central, tight spiral wooden staircase. It is a good surviving example of a cottage with more detailed features than others in the area, and it may have originally served as a servants’ dwelling to Hambutts House.
