Description

Dry Knapps House is a detached house dating from the early 17th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar to the front, with coursed and squared stone elsewhere, and has a stone slate roof with coped gables on the left and back. The building has gable stacks with moulded cappings. The house is in an L-shaped layout, with a large wing projecting to the back right, and a large external gable stack to the left. It is two storeys and an attic in height, with three windows across the front. The ground and first floors have two-light windows with a transom, featuring ovolo moulding and grouped under a continuous stopped hoodmould at each level. A central 20th-century door and porch have been added. The return side to the left has a single-light window over a two-light casement. Three 19th-century gabled dormers with two-light casements are visible in the roof. The interior has been modified, but retains a heavy A-frame roof with short standards tied to the feet of the principals. A large room is located to the left of the entrance, and a blocked early fireplace is present to the right. The house is an interesting structure, set back and partly concealed by later buildings.
