Description

A pair of semi-detached houses built around 1825. The construction is brick, with stucco applied to the front and rear elevations, and a slate roof. Brick stacks are also present. The design is a double-depth block with a recessed entrance wing on each side providing a symmetrical front. The main three-storey block features channelled rustication on the ground floor and giant pilasters at the corners and centre, supporting a modillion cornice. The ground floor windows are late 19th-century plate glass sashes set within original openings, each framed by a raised moulded architrave and a segmental pediment decorated with ribbed stucco. First-floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars, framed by openings with moulded architraves and triangular pediments, each providing access to a balcony with a decorative stucco balustrade. Second-floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars framed by moulded, eared architraves. The recessed front of each entrance wing has a glazed, lean-to porch with decorative wrought-iron standards. Each doorway has a decorative fanlight and a six-panel door. First-floor windows on the front of the entrance wings are sash windows with 3x4 panes in openings with a gauged brick, flat arched head, also giving access to a similar balcony with a decorative, bow-fronted wrought-iron balustrade. Similar balconies are present on the rear elevation, with sash windows (3x4 panes). Internally, each house features an open well staircase with stick balusters, along with original joinery, fittings, fireplaces, panelled doors, and shutters.
