Description

Gable Cottage is a dwelling that was formerly a farmhouse, known as Furnace Bottom Farm, dating from the 17th century. The building has a rendered exterior with a stone slate front slope and a Welsh slate back. It features a small three-room plan, although it likely started as a two-room layout before being extended to include a gabled section on the left.

On the right side, there is a large stack that used to have a spiral staircase made of oak, while the left side has another large stack with an unused stone spiral stair in a semi-circular container, which includes two blocked lights. The cottage is two-and-a-half storeys tall with irregular window arrangements in the gabled section on the left, featuring three two-light casements, one small two-light window under the eaves, and two new two-light windows on the right side. There is a new door in the original opening on the left, which is off-centre, and a new glazed door on the right.

The interior has been significantly modified, including the addition of a new staircase, but it retains various beams and original joists. Notably, there is a large bressummer above the fireplace on the left, which has two small square carved panels with the inscriptions 'WH' and '1699'. Additionally, there is a bread oven associated with this fireplace.
