Description

These three dwellings, formerly a mill, date from the early 19th century. They are located in Furnace Valley, near Blakeney. The buildings are constructed of small, square coursed sandstone with dressed, flush quoins, and have rubble returns and back. The roof is covered with glazed pantiles. The long, narrow block has an outshut under a catslide roof at the gable end facing the road, and it is set at a higher level at right angles to the former Malt Shovel Inn. The building is three storeys high, with a four-window front to the first and second floors, but a five-window front to the ground floor. There are three doorways, with windows above only to the first dwelling, but centrally positioned to the other two. New doors and mostly new two-light casement windows have been installed, although earlier casements remain in the second dwelling. At the rear, the two-storey section has five pairs of original two-light casement windows with leaded glass. The gable wall features two two-light casement windows and two blocked openings, all with segmental stone heads. These were originally wire-making premises. The buildings serve as a reminder of the industrial importance of the area and are grouped with the former Malt Shovel Inn.
