Description

Old Dean Hall School was originally built as a Forestry School in 1915 by C.E. Varndel, although it was never used for that purpose. It later became offices for the National Coal Board and is now a school. The building features rockface rubblestone with dressed stone used for the quoins and windows, a slate roof with overhanging eaves, and cast iron gutters. The date of construction is also noted on a rainwater hopper on the left wing.

The structure is designed in an 'L' shape, with the main block containing a hall and a small non-projecting gable to the right, along with a lower wing and an additional entrance to the left. The main entrance showcases a Jacobean-style porch with a gable and three finials, featuring a cambered arch that leads to a narrower panelled door. The main block has three and four-light stone mullion windows, while the cross gables are adorned with mullion and transom windows, all of which are leaded and retain their original metal window fittings in the Art Nouveau style. On the left side, there is a partially corbelled external stone stack with a small three-light stone mullion window in the central panel, embellished with scrolls at the weathered offsets.

The interior remains largely as it was originally completed, featuring a large six-bay hall supported by timber trusses on corbels and two elegant flat three-centred archways.
