Description
The former pump house at Lightmoor Works, associated with J. Joiner and Sons, dates from around 1840 and served as the pump and engine house for Lightmoor Colliery. The building is constructed from coursed and finely dressed rubblestone, featuring tooled and punched long and short quoin blocks. It has a hipped roof that was originally covered with slate, but only the timbers remain as of the last survey in July 1984. The structure is a three-storey rectangular block with overhanging wooden eaves supported by a row of paired brackets. The roof trusses are mostly intact and include King posts.
On the east and west sides, there are two window openings on each floor, although the windows are missing. The south side features a large arched opening with stone voussoirs at the top of the wall, flanked by a small square opening at the base. Lightmoor Colliery was established around 1840 and, by the mid-19th century, it boasted an impressive array of steam power, including one of the larger beam engines housed in this building, along with two frame beam engines and several horizontal steam engines. These were dismantled around 1934, after which the building was repurposed as a store. By July 1984, it was becoming derelict. One beam engine from the colliery is now displayed at the Dean Heritage Museum, on loan from the National Museum of Wales, but this particular engine did not operate in the pump house.
