Description
Ruspidge Methodist Church, originally a Bible Christian Chapel, was built in 1857. The building features squared and coursed rubblestone with a hipped asbestos slate roof and a small brick extension at the liturgical east (actually south) end. There is also a small 20th-century kitchen extension on the left. The church has two round-headed long windows on the front and sides, all with original sashes that include radial bars. A central gabled entrance porch contains a four-panel door and a semi-circular fanlight. Above the porch is an iron plaque decorated with oak leaves and acorns, inscribed with "Bible Christian/Chapel/Built AD 1857". Inside, the church has pews and a gallery with a decorative balustrade supported by cast iron columns. This building is a good example of a Bible Christian Chapel, a denomination that was particularly popular in the Forest of Dean during the 19th century, and it remains largely in its original condition, except for a renewed roof.
