Description
The obelisk opposite the Speech House Hotel in Cinderford is likely from the 18th century and is made of ashlar stone. It features a square base that is approximately 1 meter high, with a plain plinth, two stone courses, and a flat top that has a chamfered underside. The small base and the obelisk above were restored in 1957, as noted by a plaque on the side, although the base had previously survived on its own for many years. An inscription on the obelisk indicates that it marks the traditional center of the Forest of Dean, and there is an old photograph of it displayed in the hotel.
