Description
The memorial fountain, dated 1897, is made of Cotswold limestone and stands about 3 meters high. It is located in the central strip of High Street, opposite Ashby House. The fountain features a stone basin with an arched niche that has a frieze and a dentilled cornice. Above this, an upper obelisk is supported by four scrolled buttresses arranged diagonally. The lower part of the obelisk displays a VR monogram on a square stone panel, which is adorned with carved foliage decoration. The basin has lion-head spouts, and the niche recess includes carved dolphins. A bronze plaque in the frieze panel is inscribed with VR 1897, along with newer plates inscribed GRV 1935 and ERII 1977. The entire structure is set on an area paved with engineering bricks, which is retained by a rubble sandstone wall.
