Description

SO 61 SE NEWNHAM HIGH STREET (west side) 2/55 Memorial Fountain -

Fountain. Dated 1897. Cotswold limestone. About 3 m high set in central strip of High Street, opposite Ashby House. Stone basin with arched niche carrying frieze and dentilled cornice, upper obelisk supported by four scrolled buttresses set diagonally. Lower part of obelisk carries VR mono- gram on square panel in stone with carved foliage decoration. Lion-head spouts to basin and carved dolphins in niche recess; bronze plaque in frieze panel, inscribed VR 1897; also new plates GRV 1935 and ERII 1977. The whole set on engineering brick paved area to recess retained by rubble sandstone wall.
