Description
The Gables and Britannia House are a dwelling, with a former inn use, likely dating back to the 17th century or earlier. The building is timber-framed with rendered panels, and has a concrete tile roof. It features two prominent gables with 19th-century bargeboards, extending back to a ridge roofline. The arrangement is of three storeys and three windows. A 19th-century shop front is present, incorporating a new door, one fixed sash window, and one sash window without bars on the ground floor. The first floor has three two-light casement windows, and the gables contain two small casement windows, each with four panes. A panelled and glazed door is topped with a flat hood. Inside, a beam on the ground floor exhibits a stopped end and ‘peg’ decoration, comparable to features found in Kingston House. Significant heavy box framing, measuring approximately 200mm at 1000mm centres, can be observed, along with propped roof principals. The building contains a fine newel stair with a large, roughly finished newel post, and a small window to the stairwell featuring leaded glazing. A cellar is located to the left of the main building.
