Description
The War Memorial in Gretton, dating from 1883 and modified in 1918, is a fountain that has been adapted to serve as a memorial. It is constructed from limestone, with the enclosing walls replaced by artificial stone and the paving made of plain concrete slab. The memorial features a quadrilobed fountain with a short quadrilobe column base topped with stiff leaf and ball flower caps, set in a basin with a rounded edge and a cavetto base. This is capped by a square obelisk that stands on a square plinth adorned with high relief moulded decoration. The entire structure is set on an octagonal concrete base and enclosed by a wall made of artificial stone, which is faced at the street with two rock-faced stone piers topped with cross-gabled round-headed caps and chamfered cases. The cap stones are also repeated at six other points around the top of the wall, which was formerly railed. A rectangular stone panel set into the back wall bears the inscription: "This fountain was erected in December 1883 by Col The Honourable E Lc W Forester for the benefit of the poor of Gretton." The obelisk also lists the names of those from the parish who fell in the Great War.
