Description

A small, detached cottage, likely dating from the 17th century. It is constructed with timber framing, some coursed limestone, and a gable end in brick. The roof is thatched in two levels, with a stone stack at the junction, but the upper section is 7 courses of brick, and half-hipped to the road. Originally a one-windowed cottage facing the road, it now has 3-light casement windows under wooden lintels. The right return displays 4 casements, while the far gable has timber framing with wattle and daub infill, a small fixed window in the roof space, over a 2-light casement. A 20th-century one-storey extension is also present. A late 20th-century porch and door feature on the west front. The interior contains a large bressummer fire opening. The cottage was likely a labourer’s dwelling at the centre of the original village and is associated with the old church, which now only survives as its tower.
