Description
The church tower, which was formerly located at the west end of a church that has since been demolished, dates from the 15th or 16th century. It is constructed from large squared and dressed limestone blocks and features a pyramidal stone slate roof. The tower is two stories high and square in shape, with a moulded drip at half height on the southeast and west sides. On the west side, there is a 16th-century three-light hollow chamfered mullioned and transomed window with a four-centred head, while the east side has a simple chamfered opening supported by heavy respond caps. The upper stage includes slit windows on the north, west, and south sides. Diagonal buttresses are present on the southwest and northwest corners. This tower is all that remains of the church, which likely played a central role in the original development of Gretton as a village.
