Description

Willow Cottage and Upper School Cottage is a former school house and dwelling, now divided into two homes. It dates from the 17th century and has significant additions from the 20th century, along with modifications from the 19th century. The building is constructed from coursed and squared limestone, topped with concrete stone slates.

The structure has a complex design featuring various gables and dormers. The street-facing side has two gabled sections; the right half is the original 17th-century part, while the left is a 20th-century addition. The older gable features 2-light over 3-light hollow chamfer mullion casements with stopped drips. The return wall on the right includes an external eaves stack next to the door of Willow Cottage and a 2½ storey gable for Upper School Cottage, which has a single light opening in the roof space and 2-light reserve chamfer mullion casements on both the ground and first floors, along with a late 20th-century door and gabled porch.

On the east front, the corresponding gable has a single light in the gable above a 2-light reserve chamfer mullioned casement with a stopped drip at the first floor, and a 20th-century steel casement at the ground floor. Additionally, to this front, to the right of the 3-storey gable, there is a very wide early plank door.

Inside Upper School Cottage, there are deep chamfered beams, one timber-framed partition with wattle and daub, a fireplace with a chamfered bressumer and good stone cheeks, and a roof light in the east gable with an early internal shutter. Despite its many modifications, the property retains architectural and historic interest.
