Description

Calcot Farm Barn and the barn adjoining on the north end are former tithe barns of Kingswood Abbey. They were originally built in 1300 by Abbot Henry of Kingswood and were rebuilt in 1729, with both dates recorded on inscription stones in the porch on the east side. The barns have undergone significant alterations in the 20th century. The main barn is constructed of rubble stone and features simple plain buttresses around it. It originally had a stone slate roof, which was removed in 1927 and replaced with corrugated material. The barn to the north retains its stone slate roof. An illustration from The Gentleman's Magazine in 1795 depicts a steeply pitched roof with two swept pyramidal-roofed projecting porches and a pointed arched loft door in the south gable end. While the doorway remains, the roof pitch has been greatly lowered, and both opposing porches are now gabled, with the one to the west being blocked. At the time of the survey in March 1986, the barn was generally in a dilapidated condition. The inscription stone from the rebuilding states, "This BARN was Burnt Down by / LIGHTNING October 9th 1728 / Was Rebuilt, at the Cost of / THOMAS ESTCOURT, Esq; / By John Pill Carpenter: / Finished October 20th 1729." The taller barn on the north side, likely built in the late 18th century, has a connecting doorway with the tithe barn. It features three plain buttresses to the west, with framed narrow ventilators and a shuttered pitch hole. The interior consists of six bays, one with a king post truss and the rest with two collar beams, and is concreted up to about 3 meters.
