Description

The wall, built in 1847, forms part of a farmyard complex created for Robert Stayner Holford, possibly designed by Lewis Vulliamy. It connects the barn, stable block, and their adjoining cowhouses, though it does not touch them. The wall is constructed of rubble stone, with sections of drystone work, and incorporates plain piers with rounded caps at openings. The main section runs southwest to northeast between the stable block and cowhouses, incorporating three openings with pairs of piers. Two shorter sections extend at right angles to the northwest, approaching the barn and flanking a cart entry on each side, creating three nearly enclosed areas within the yard. The wall’s height varies between approximately 1 meter and 1.5 meters. It remains a largely unaltered feature in a complete contemporary farmyard, potentially one of several built in the area by Vulliamy, and serves as a vital link between the various farm buildings.
