Description
The Old Rectory is a former rectory that has been converted into a private detached house. It was built in 1729 by Thomas Savage on the site of an older house and was enlarged in the 19th century. The exterior is roughcast with alternating flush quoins and features a coursed and dressed stone two-storey bay added in the 19th century to the east. The roof is hipped and covered with stone slate, and there are two large external lateral stacks on the south side, complete with stone flues and a moulded cornice, as well as a large stone ridge stack on the north cross wing.
Originally designed in an H shape, the building includes a large 19th-century wing on the north side, which has two storeys and an attic. The east front, likely the main façade, features a central 20th-century door and a datestone above it with the initials TS and the date 1729. The original window arrangement was 2/1/2, consisting of 18-pane sashes with thick glazing bars. The bays to the left have been replaced by a 19th-century canted bay with three large 12-pane sashes on each floor. The west front retains mostly original 18-pane sashes, although the central bay has two replaced windows above a 20th-century doorcase with a segmental pediment in a contemporary style. The 19th-century wing to the north includes both 18-pane and 12-pane sashes.
There are hipped dormers on the roof, with three on the east side and one on the west. Inside, the house retains much original timberwork, including doors, internal shutters, and a stick baluster staircase. There is also a large chamfered stone fireplace located below the ridge stack on the ground floor, accompanied by a stone flag floor.
