Description
The Gables is a house dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of random rubble limestone, with roughcast render, and has a stone slate roof. The plan is centralised, with a central lobby leading to the stair, and stacks heating the rooms either side. There's an 18th/early 19th century rear right wing, a 20th-century lean-to extension to the rear, and a 1992 extension to the right.
The two-storey house includes an attic. The front has two gables flanking the central entrance. The outer ground floor and upper floor have mullioned and transomed timber windows with iron casements. Above a 20th-century porch addition is a 2-light stone-mullioned window with a hoodmould, and the gable ends have 20th-century attic windows also under hood moulds. The left-hand (south) elevation has two 2-light stone-mullioned windows with hood moulds. The rear has two gables with rendered stone stacks.
Inside, the house retains many early 18th-century features, including stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, a clasped-purlin roof and plank and panelled doors. The front door opens into a lobby with an open-well stair featuring turned balusters on a closed string. A passage to the rear has ogee moulding to three doors, with one door providing access to a cellar.
The Gables is a good example of a house in the characteristic vernacular tradition, displaying a centralised plan form and details indicative of its early 18th-century date.
