Description

This is an early 19th-century barn with attached stables, situated on the west side of Barton End, along the Horsley Bath Road. The barn is constructed from random and coursed rubble limestone, with stone slate roofs. The barn itself is five bays wide, featuring porches on both the north and south sides. Attached stables form two sides of a yard on the south side.

The south-facing barn porch has a timber lintel and plank doors, flanked by small lean-to outshuts. Exposed tie beam ends are visible in the barn's side walls. The west stable range projects forward into the yard, facing east, and includes a stable door and loft hole. A small casement window is located to the left. A 20th-century shelter shed, which is not of particular interest, has been rebuilt.

The east-facing stables extending from the east end of the barn have three doorways with heavy timber lintels, along with doorways featuring ventilated upper parts. A small iron grille is set into the south gable end. A loft doorway is present on the east side with stone steps leading to a plank door. A similar doorway is located at the east end of the barn, above which is a louvred, segmental arched opening. A central lean-to north porch is also present. The interior was not inspected, but the roof structure likely comprises collar and tie-beam trusses.
