Description
This is a late 18th-century barn situated approximately 140 metres northeast of Barton End Farmhouse. The barn is constructed of random rubble limestone with a stone slate and concrete tile roof. It is a ten-bay structure, featuring a gabled east porch and an outbuilding attached to the west. The east porch has corrugated iron doors and a timber lintel, incorporating a small square hole that may have been a former columbarium. A 20th-century open-fronted lean-to addition on the right side is not considered to be of special interest. Square barn vents are present. A loft doorway, accessed by stone steps, is located to the left of the porch. The south end of the barn appears to have been rebuilt, with doorways now bearing concrete lintels. A doorway on the west side aligns with the east porch. Attached to the left is a gabled outbuilding, possibly an original horse engine house. Inside, the barn features a dividing wall creating a seven-bay section to the south and a further three bays with a collar and tie-beam truss roof, partially rebuilt. Pigeon holes are visible within the loft of the porch. Despite minor alterations to the structure, the barn is notably long and represents a typical example of the major south Cotswold barn type.
