Description
Clayfields is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a detached private house. It dates from the early 19th century and is designed in a late 17th-century style, with slight alterations made in the early 20th century. The building features a roughcast exterior on a stone plinth, a stone slate roof with coped gables and ball finials, and scattered stone stacks.
The structure consists of a single front range with a central rear gable and two rear ranges that form a U-shape, standing two storeys high with an attic. The south front displays three gables, each featuring a two-light leaded stone mullion window with a square hoodmould at the apex, and a 16-pane sash window with a square hoodmould on the first floor. The ground floor has two larger 16-pane sash windows flanking a central 19th-century gabled porch, which has inner double half-glazed doors adorned with a decorative radial fanlight set in a chamfered stone surround.
The right-hand return of the building includes 16-pane sashes in plain architraves and one three-light casement window beneath a small gable, along with a small single-storey wing from the 20th century that is not of special interest. The left-hand return features a two-storey bay and metal casement windows with square hoodmoulds, also dating from the 20th century.
Inside, the property is largely intact, showcasing reeded doorcases with corner motifs, some panelling—particularly in the hall which includes a ramped stick baluster staircase—plasterwork, doors, and shutters.
