Description

Village Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dated 'ARM 1696' for Richard Matthews, which underwent extensive rebuilding in the late 18th century and had alterations around 1820. It is constructed from coursed and squared rubble limestone, with ashlar and rubble chimneys, and has a stone slate roof. The building is two-storey with an attic and features an L-plan layout, with a lower two-storey section and single-storey outbuildings at the east end.

The front of the farmhouse has a three-window arrangement, with tripartite sashes featuring glazing bars on the ground floor and 12-pane sashes on the upper floor. There is a central moulded Tudor arched doorway with a floating cornice, which is a late 17th-century feature that was re-set during the late 18th-century alterations, with the datestone placed above it. Continuous moulded drip courses run above the windows. The right part of the front has small-pane casements with timber lintels.

The west end has a parapet gabled end to the front range, with two ovolo moulded cross windows on each floor and a two-light attic window with a continuous hoodmould in the gable. The left wing is mostly random rubble and includes a two-light chamfered mullioned casement and a blocked single-light window, which may be part of the original 1696 house. At the rear, the right wing has a parapet gable with a chimney that has a moulded cap, and restored cross windows below. Most interior features date from the c1780 rebuilding.
