Description
This is a barn located approximately 17 meters north of Whalley Farm, dated and initialled 'R.H.M. MDCCXL' (1740) on a stone above the double-width door on the east side. The barn is constructed from coursed squared and finely dressed limestone, with a wood shingle roof. It has a 'T'-shaped plan featuring a centrally placed projecting porch on the west side. The porch has a flat-chamfered plinth and is supported by clamp buttresses that are flush with the facade.
The double plank doors are set within a segmental-headed flat-chamfered arched surround, and there is a two-light stone-mullioned window above this arch. A plank door on the right-hand wall provides access to the loft, which was formerly reached by wooden stairs. There are ventilation slits on either side of the projecting porch, and another set of double plank doors within a segmental-headed surround opposite the porch, which are boarded over. A pitching window is located in the south gable end, with additional ventilation slits in both gable ends. A circular owl hole is positioned towards the apex of the north gable end, and the flat gable end coping features roll-cross saddles, with a weathervane at the south gable end.
Inside, the barn has five bays, and the original roof trusses have been replaced by king post trusses with double butt purlins.
