Description
The Old Rectory is a former rectory that has been converted into a house. It dates from the 17th century, with additions from the late 18th century, 19th century, and 20th century. The building features coursed squared and dressed limestone, ashlar, and rendered brick with stone stacks. It has a 'U'-shaped plan, with the main body from the 17th century forming the left-hand wing. The late 18th century entrance front, described as 'lately built' in 1781, is slightly projecting and located off-centre to the right. The right side has a 19th century gabled wing, while there is a single storey, flat-roofed infill between the wings at the rear, which is not of special interest.
The main body of the building is two storeys with an attic, which is lit by 20th century two-light segmental-headed roof dormers that have glazing bars. The facade has a 3:3:1 window arrangement, with the entrance featuring a Roman Doric portico and 12-pane sash windows on either side and on the first floor. To the left of the entrance, there are 17th century stone-mullioned cross-windows, and a string course runs between the ground and first floor windows. The left-hand wall is lit by 12-pane sashes set in stone surrounds of former cross-mullioned windows. The entrance has a 20th century door with glazing bars at the centre. At the rear, massive diagonal buttresses support the gable end of the 17th century main body, where the land falls away steeply. The interior has not been inspected.
