Description
Dowdeswell House is a detached house with origins in the early 17th century, with later additions from the late 18th century and 19th century, and an extension from 1932, as indicated by the date on the rainwater head. The building features an ashlar facade, while the rest is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone. It has a stone slate and concrete tile roof with stone stacks. The house has an 'L'-shaped plan, with a 17th-century wing at the rear that has later outbuildings likely from the 19th century attached to it.
The 18th-century style extension, dated 1932, is located at the right gable end of the main body, and there is a projecting porch, probably from the same period, positioned off-centre to the left. The main body of the house is two storeys high with an attic, which is illuminated by two and four-light hipped roof dormers. The facade has eight windows, all of which are 12-pane sashes with plain architraves. There is a canted two-storey bay at the left gable end and a band between the ground and first floor windows. The porch has a segmental head, with double part-glazed doors and a fanlight at the front, along with a glazed door within. The 17th-century wing at the rear is lit by two and five-light hollow chamfered casements. The late 18th-century main body features a parapet and an axial stack. The interior has not been inspected.
