Description
Dowdeswell Lodge is a former west lodge to Dowdeswell Court, built in the mid to late 19th century for the Rogers family. The building is constructed of ashlar with a slate roof and has a rectangular main body featuring a central three-bay projection at both the front and back. There is a 20th-century extension in the same style at the rear left, creating a 'u'-shaped plan.
The lodge showcases an Italianate design with a single storey and a tetrastyle temple front that has a 1:2:1 window arrangement, with the wings set back slightly on either side. A triangular pediment, adorned with antefixae and an acroterion, sits above the central three bays. The central entrance features a 20th-century door with glazing bars, accessed by three steps, and is topped by a projecting stone canopy that displays the Rogers family shield. The windows are round-headed, four-pane sashes set within moulded architraves, complete with projecting sills, and similar windows are found in the wings.
Above the doorways, there is a moulded hood featuring the Rogers family heraldic shield, flanked by floral and fruit decorations. The doorways are flanked by engaged fluted Corinthian columns, with pilasters at the corners also sporting Corinthian capitals, and rusticated quoins at the corners of the main body. A stone balustrade runs along the level of the frieze on either side of the projecting porch. This lodge was formerly the main entrance to Dowdeswell Court.
